Serre Chevalier Vallée is shown here as a sweeping alpine panorama, stretching from Briançon across the valley settlements to Le Monêtier-les-Bains beneath a long wall of snow-covered mountains. Rather than flattening the landscape into a diagram, the map presents the ski area as a vivid bird’s-eye view, with the pistes laid directly onto ridges, bowls, wooded slopes and village approaches. The result is both practical and atmospheric: a map that captures the scale of the terrain as well as the structure of the resort.

Along the lower edge, the valley forms a pale corridor of roads, buildings and a narrow blue watercourse, linking Chantemerle, Villeneuve, La Salle-les-Alpes and the smaller hamlets in between. Above them, the mountain sectors rise in succession, from Prorel and Col du Prorel on the left through Serre Ratier, Grand Alpe and Fréjus, then onwards to the higher ground around La Cucumelle, Roche Robert and Pic de l’Yret. Behind the lift-served slopes, the skyline becomes more dramatic still, with the labelled summits of La Meije, Les Agneaux, Dôme du Monêtier and Barre des Écrins giving the whole composition a grand, high-alpine setting.

What makes this map especially engaging is the way its detailed ski network sits within such richly illustrated terrain. Fine red, blue, green and black route lines thread across open snowfields and down through dark conifer forests, while black lift alignments climb from the valley towards the main ski sectors. The central slopes around Serre Ratier, Grand Alpe and Fréjus are particularly dense with crossings and descents, creating a lively mesh of routes over the mountain face. At the same time, the painterly treatment of the land keeps the image from feeling crowded: icy blues and white snowfields dominate the upper slopes, while darker woodland and warm-toned villages anchor the scene below.

There are also smaller details that give the map character beyond its basic geography. The white eagle emblem and Serre Chevalier Vallée title stand crisply against the deep blue sky, setting a confident tone from the outset. Bright red BBQ markers punctuate the cooler palette, and clusters of service symbols around the main access points hint at the rhythm of a day on the mountain without overwhelming the image. From a distance, it reads as a handsome mountain panorama; closer up, the tiny piste labels, lift stations, forests and village buildings reward slow looking.

For anyone who knows Serre Chevalier, this is the kind of map that invites recognition: the line of the valley, the spacing of the villages, the familiar rise of the slopes above Chantemerle or Villeneuve, the higher, wilder terrain towards Le Monêtier. For someone planning a future trip, it offers a satisfying sense of the resort’s breadth and variety. In either case, it makes appealing wall art because it holds onto both memory and geography at once.

The art of the ski map

The distinctive quality of this piece lies in its balance between panorama and piste plan. The mountains are modelled with real visual drama — sharp peaks, glacier-like snowfields, blue-grey rock and heavily shaded forests — yet the ski area remains legible, with routes and lift lines clearly separated from the background.

That clarity is helped by the compact typography and the careful layering of detail. Summit names, village labels and elevation figures give structure to the scene, while the finer piste markings encourage closer inspection. It is a map that works beautifully at a glance, then reveals much more as you spend time with it.

A sense of place at home

This map would sit particularly well in a chalet sitting room, a study or a hallway where its long horizontal composition can be appreciated properly. The cool blues, whites and dark greens give it a composed alpine palette, while the recognisable villages and mountain skyline lend it a personal connection that suits a home shaped by ski memories.

A thoughtful gift for skiers

This would make a thoughtful gift for someone who returns to Serre Chevalier year after year, has family memories in one of the valley villages, or simply loves the scale of this part of the French Alps. Its appeal lies in how specifically it captures the resort’s layout and mountain backdrop, rather than offering a generic winter scene.

Perfect for:

  • A birthday gift for a skier who knows Serre Chevalier well
  • A keepsake of a memorable family holiday in the valley
  • A chalet owner with links to Briançon, Chantemerle or Le Monêtier-les-Bains
  • An anniversary gift recalling time spent in the mountains together
  • A housewarming present for an alpine home or ski apartment
  • Someone planning a long-awaited trip to this part of France

It is a map that keeps Serre Chevalier’s long valley, wooded slopes and high snowy skyline vividly in view.
